What if you could ask God anything? What would you ask, and how would He answer? Chelsea Chambers is on her own. After a public split from her NFL superstar husband, Chelsea takes a bold step out of the limelight and behind the counter of the Higher Grounds Café, an old-fashioned coffee shop in dire need of reinvention. But when her courage, expert planning, and out-of-this-world cupcakes fail to pay the bills, this newly single mom finds herself desperate for help. Better yet, a miracle. Then a curious stranger lands on Chelsea’s doorstep, and with him, an even more curious string of events. Soon, customers are flocking to the Higher Grounds Café, and not just for the cupcakes and cappuccino. They’ve come for the internet connection to the divine. Now the café has become the go-to place for people in search of answers to life’s biggest questions. When a catastrophe strikes and her ex comes calling, Chelsea begins to wonder if the whole universe is conspiring against her quest to make it on her own. After a shocking discovery opens her eyes to the unseen world around her, Chelsea finds the courage to ask God a question of her own—and heaven answers in a most unexpected way. “Max Lucado’s remarkable gift of storytelling brings the pages to life in his novel Miracle at the Higher Grounds Café. Book Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe (Heavenly) Review :

This is not vintage Mac at his best. It’s very different. He, and his two co-authors cross over firmly into sci-fi/fantasy. The idea of the God Blog allows some questions to be posed and answered from a wise nice place. The reader’s comfort with the answers likely reflect his or her theological/worldview. The in-fleshed guardian angels seems a bit of a stretch in Manny’s clumsiness but probably preferred to the picture perfect “Touched by an Angel.” That was a visual medium so perhaps that was needed to appeal visually to the audience. The story moves, engages, grips—at least this reader (a guy) though I think this story line likely appeal more to women. There is humor, bitterness, an unforgiving heart, suspense—how will the conflict be resolved? I found the resolution unsatisfactory. The content and concept of the God Blog required a measure of faith in uncertainty and openness in vulnerability. That was minimized in the overpowering signs that turned the tide. The internal struggles of the main characters were healed in ways uncommon to most of us. Still, 4 stars for the storyline, the stirring of imagination, and the ending even if the fulcrum to move the principles was flawed (too pat, too signy-especially since Jesus repeatedly refuses to give a sign).
Max Lucado has a warm hug in everything he writes. Needing a hug from a brother drew me to this story. We all need a hug sometimes. The story offers so much more to the seeker of comfort. In the chaos of todays world it is easy to think we are on our own, alone, trying to make sense of life. This deception of the enemy is commonly used to discourage God’s children. Max Lucado weaves a tale at Higher Grounds to remind us that we are never alone. Jesus is always with us, loving us, and seeking our best. He will use whatever means necessary to encourage our faith in Him and open our hearts to the truth of His forever love. He wants us to know Him. He is here, there, and everywhere just waiting for us to recognize our need of His grace, mercy and love. We cannot conceive the bounty of His care for us, when we open our hearts door and let Him in. He cares for You. Taste and you will see.
